What to Bring to Your Initial Attorney Appointment

Once you have decided on an attorney to represent you for you auto accident, you will need to prepare for your initial appointment with your attorney by gathering documentation to bring with you for your appointment. While the attorney’s office should provide you with instructions on what to bring to the first meeting, many often need a reminder, especially during the hectic days following an auto accident.

To begin: make sure you have your driver’s license, or a state issued photo identification. Your attorney needs to verify that you are who you say you are!

Be sure that you have your health insurance cards. If you have Medicare or Medicaid, it is best to bring that card as well.

You will also need your social security card! Don’t forget it.

Organize any documents you have in relation to the investigation of the accident, such as your auto insurance card and policy, the traffic accident report, citations, photos of your car or injuries, towing bill, and if you have it, any Property Damage Estimate you may have received.

If you are able, it is advisable to thoroughly document the damage to your car, personal properly and injuries with photographs as soon after the accident as possible. If you believe it may be related, it is better to present it at the initial meeting and have your attorney determine if it is needed.

Finally, gather all documents you have regarding your medical expenses, including receipts, medical reports, medical bills, discharge papers, and the names and phone numbers of your medical providers. This includes advising your attorney of your primary care physician as well as any other physician you see on a regular basis or for urgent care issues.

To properly represent you, your attorney needs to obtain from you a complete medical history so that she can compare and contrast your underlying health conditions and problems against any new or aggravated symptoms caused by the auto accident. Letting your attorney know of any medical issues you have or have had can go a long way in preventing confusion.
