Bicyclists Most Recent Victims of Hit and Runs
Some recent articles in the local news are raising the awareness of the occurrence of bicyclists being struck by vehicles.
In Polk County, a man was the victim of a hit and run. The 70-year-old man was riding his bike in the bike lane when he was struck. He had to be airlifted to the hospital. Unfortunately, no description of the vehicle is available and the sheriff’s office is seeking information.
In Highlands County, a boy was the victim of a hit and run. The boys hand was struck by a disc plow hanging over the side of a tractor, causing him to be knocked off his bike. He was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The Florida Highway Patrol is seeking information.
In Manatee County, the Florida Highway Patrol is taking measures to help make the roads a little safer for bicyclists. They created Operation P.E.D.S (pedestrian education and driver safety). They hope to provide information to drivers and bicyclists while cracking down on dangerous drivers.
Drivers should always stay alert and be on the lookout for bicyclists and pedestrians while driving.
