When you have been injured in an auto accident, you want to seek medical care. You call your Primary Care Physician to make an appointment, only to be told that they won’t see you because it is an auto accident. Often Primary Care Physician’s offices have a referral for you to a clinic that does handle auto accidents.
My clients are often very upset that their Primary Care Physician will not see them. Other times it can be very disconcerting because the clinic they have been referred to is a chiropractor. Occasionally I have heard the complaint that the clinic was more concerned about the legal aspects of their care than their medical care.
If you have been in an auto accident, you have the option to choose your own physician. Whether you prefer a Medical Doctor, a Doctor of Osteopathy or a Chiropractic Physician, the choice is yours. If you feel you may need to see a specialist, such an Orthopedic Doctor or a Neurologist, that is also your choice. Most specialists’ offices do not have the same restriction as Primary Care Physicians when it comes to seeing auto accident patients.
If you have health insurance, and would like to use it as secondary to your auto insurance, to see your medical providers, you can choose from your health insurance plan’s list of medical providers. If you need a referral from your Primary Care Physician to see a specialist, it has been my experience, that although they won’t see you for the auto accident, they will provide the referral if you ask.
Obtaining medical care after an auto accident can be confusing. Often, Primary Care Physicians, whose office does not handle auto accidents, can make it more confusing.
