Drop my UM coverage? Nah bro!

When you are purchasing auto insurance, there are always various coverages to choose from. Often times, agents will look to minimize your costs, in order to get you to sign on the dotted line. While the lowest premium option seems like a smart thing to do, don’t be fooled, as it often is the quote without Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIm) Coverage. UM/UIM coverage is not required by the State of Florida but you should elect it as it provides money for a lump settlement should you be hit and injured by an uninsured or underinsured motorist. It is estimated that at least 25% and potentially up to 35% of Florida drivers do not carry Bodily Injury (BI) Coverage. This is the coverage that pays you for your lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering caused by the at-fault driver’s negligence. If the person who hits you doesn’t have BI, or enough BI Coverage, UM/UIM is your only hope to recover financially.

So when you are reviewing and signing all your auto insurance documents, make sure you understand what you are selecting and what you are waiving. Insist on carrying UM/UIM Coverage and do NOT sign any form that indicates you are rejecting UM/UIM coverage. And remember, if your agent asks you if you want to drop your UM coverage to save money, the answer should always be “Nah Bro!”
